Technophobia - the sign of a born leader?

I thought this story/commentary might be interesting to some of us leaders who have little/no technophobia. Is this really a born-leader thing or is it more of a generational thing (i.e. leaders who came to prominence years before the widespread availability of the internet)?

I remember early on, John Maxwell and Bill Hybels boasting (my word Smile) how internet illiterate they were. Of course, then there's the founder of this site, Rick Warren, who is pretty internet savvy, from what I understand.

  •  It scares me to think that the potential leader of the free-world has so little grasp of one of the major changes in our world in the last 20 years.  It makes me afraid that he isn't on top of other things going on in our world as well.  This of course could be a very unfair criticism but ignorance is never a good thing to boast about.

I don't think the issue is about "ignorance."  Mastering the Internet is not the equivalent of wisdom any more than buying thirty books on the French language means one is fluent in French.

The amount of information one possesses is not directly related to the ability one has of leading.  By analogy a sniper's expertise is not determined by how many bullets the magazine in his gun holds.

I'd bet that there are very few significant events that McCain does not know about.  Also, I don't know if you have ever flown in a fighter plane (I have not), but you have to master a significant amount of information to stay in the air.  Annapolis is a very difficult University to get through.

As the article points out, Tony Blair did not have a cell phone the entire time he was leading (and doing so effectively) a major world power.

I wouldn't make too much of McCain's lack of interest in My Space.

  •  Hi,

As I stated it may not be a fair anology but what I was expressing was my feelings around the information in the story.  Knowing how to fly a fighter jet is not a qualification for either wisdom or leadership either.  By the way he got shot down so how well could he fly anyway.  Ok, that is probably a bad joke but I couldn't resist.  Feelings are neither right nor wrong I was just curious if others had the same reaction to the story when it came out.

ROFLMBO!  You owe me the $100 deductible for having all the mocha I just blew out of my news cleaned out of my laptop.  Cool

(On second thought, the laugh was worth $100.  We'll call it even.)

Touche.  Can't fight logic like that :)  Tony blew his coffee right out his "news."
